Theme: Integrating Innovation

The world was forever changed on November 30, 2022, with the grand introduction of Chat Gpt. This groundbreaking announcement did not merely unveil a run-of-the-mill chatbot. Instead, it revealed an intellectual marvel—a system that possessed the remarkable capacity to learn and adapt. A mere couple of years ago, the idea of artificial intelligence programs becoming an integral part of our daily lives was unfathomable. Yet, today, we find ourselves in a reality where AI programs like Chat Gpt have become a global sensation, effortlessly producing plays rivaling that of Shakespeare and conjuring artwork rivaling Van Gogh himself. Recent development in technology has led many to believe that tomorrow holds the dawn of artificial general intelligence, as American Linguist, Noam Chomsky, put it, “a future where machines not only surpass humans quantitatively…but also qualitatively, possessing the very essence of intellectual insight, artistic creativity, and every other characteristic that defines our human faculties.

However, it is crucial to recognize that such extraordinary advancements inevitably come with their fair share of challenges. During recent local classes led by the esteemed Dr. Kornbluth, the president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, she emphasized the need for establishing guidelines and fostering global cooperation to ensure the responsible and ethical integration of AI into our society. Her insightful remarks underscore the importance of maintaining a delicate balance between innovation and societal well-being. For example, in the industries of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), concerns have emerged about the persisting gender disparities, with women facing more significant challenges in accessing equal opportunities. Additionally, unequal access to digital technologies persists, leaving less developed communities behind in the digital revolution. Aside from ethical concerns, environmental advocates have also voiced their apprehensions about the ecological impact of rapid technological advancement. The acidification of our oceans, exacerbated by human activities, presents a grave concern that cannot be overlooked. Likewise, the sustainability of space-based research and manufacturing necessitates careful consideration to ensure that our future generations are able to venture beyond Earth’s boundaries.

For delegates of the CSIAMUN XVI, as the next generation of global leaders and avid innovators, integrating innovation through international cooperation should be held dear to their hearts. To confront these multifaceted challenges, global cooperation assumes paramount importance. By promoting a collective effort that spans borders and transcends boundaries, we can aspire to foster a future where technological progress is revolutionary but also equitable, responsible, and sustainable.

Secretary-General

Greetings Delegates!

My name is Songeun Lee, the Secretary General of this year’s CSIAMUN.
It is my utmost pleasure to welcome students to participate in the CheongShim International Academy Model United Nations 2024.

Ever since the first launching of our CSIAMUN in 2007, the CSIAMUN community has been struggling to make each conference a welcoming, invaluable, and exciting experience for our delegates.

Every year, our conferences have greeted exceptional delegates eager to deliver their voices and passions about the challenges our society confronts. I very much appreciate the attention and participation the delegates bring every year.
CSIAMUN XVI emphasizes the embracement of global delegates willing to actively interact within the MUN community.

CSIAMUN has faced a series of hardships during the past pandemic, with online conferences and strict safety regulations that may have hindered the valuable experiences of our delegates. However, in CSIAMUN XVI, I expect to provide delegates with a further live and vivid experience with the exchange of ideas between international students as well.

Personally, I enjoy interacting with others and sharing my original stories, but most especially, I love making others smile. The sound of laughter and joy has always been the energy behind my efforts. I truly hope that this experience will be a smiley experience for all delegates!

I candidly invite students again to experience the meaningful event our secretariats, chairs, and staff members have to offer.

Sunho Choi
Deputy Secretary-General

In charge of International Delegations

Greetings All,

I am Sunho Choi, a junior at Cheongshim International, and I am honoured to serve as the deputy secretary-general for this year’s conference.

This year’s CSIAMUN XVI theme is “Integrating innovation”: creating and adapting standards, customs, and expectations in our rapidly changing world. For almost eight decades, the United Nations has consistently shown leadership in this role: creating an inclusive and peaceful world, extending the amenities of our modern world to all, and improving livelihoods. We have also created a shared set of ideals for the future: the UN Sustainable Development Goals. It is my utmost hope the UN body will continue to serve our world well in this role.

On a more personal note, this will be the last and culminating Model United Nations conference of my high school MUN career. I’ve spent over six years in the MUNiverse, attending and leading conferences throughout the APAC Region as a delegate, a student officer, the head of staff, and now, a Deputy Secretary General.

I’ve met numerous inspirational folks and grown as a negotiator, a debater, and a (salad-steak-and-reading-loving) person. And never once did this community fail to intrigue me. It is not only a place where I first-handedly engaged in global diplomacy but also a place that gave me a chance to question the world in which we all reside: the meaning of “us”, the purpose of “humanity”, and what lies ahead of us.

Those of you beginning your journey know that we were all newcomers at one point in the past. (That means the thrilling joy of energy and professionalism with a spice of awkwardness.) For those of you veterans, I wish to offer a few of Winston Churchill’s words: “This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.”

Whether you are a first-timer or an experienced delegate, there’s always a lot you can take away from practising the modus operandi of diplomatic relations. I hope you have a fascinating journey of your own in this community.

Jinhoo Oh
Deputy Secretary-General

Greetings, delegates!

I am Jinhoo Oh, the deputy secretary-general of CSIAMUN XVI. It is a privilege to welcome all delegates to this year’s CSIAMUN conference.

Having engaged in CSIAMUN as a delegate, a chair, and now partaking as a fellow member of the secretariat, I am confident that all participants will have a fruitful time in our 16th conference.

Every session will come with its lessons, and every moment will be full of intellectual joy and inspiring interactions. Our secretariats will also try our best to make this experience enjoyable for every delegate.

See you in February!

It is my great honour to have you in CSIAMUN XVI, and as the Head of Press, I promise to leave your unforgettable experiences as a beautiful record. I hope you have the best experience at CSIAMUN XVI.

Committees and Passed Resolutions

Economic and Social Council

Agenda Intro

Agenda A: Addressing gender-based violence and resolving the consequences of domestic violence against women

Gender-based violence, particularly domestic violence against women, remains a pressing and deeply concerning issue in societies worldwide. It represents a breach of human rights, sustained gender inequality, and significant physical, emotional, and psychological suffering to those affected.

Addressing gender-based violence and resolving the consequences of domestic violence against women is not just a matter of ethics; it’s also a vital stride toward establishing fair and inclusive societies.

Agenda B: Regional imbalance development in Europe and Asia due to the Marshall Plan

The Marshall Plan, a pivotal post-World War II initiative, aimed to aid the economic recovery of war-torn Europe. While it brought about significant development in the European region, it also inadvertently contributed to regional imbalances. This agenda explores the consequences of the Marshall Plan in both Europe and Asia, focusing on the problems and disparities it generated and the potential solutions for addressing them.

Sohee Kim
Head Chair

Greetings to all delegates!

My name is Kim Sohee, the head chair of the Economic and Social Council of the CSIAMUN. It is a distinct honour for me to participate in the CSIAMUN as a chair with amazing delegates and fellow club members.

Always remember that MUN is not a competition but a place to interact and discuss your opinion actively and freely with many people to make the best resolutions for the given agenda. I will try my best to become the best head chair by interacting and communicating with other delegates and members so that everyone leaves with a wonderful, memorable experience after CSIAMUN.

Thank you, and see you soon!

Sihyeon Park
Deputy Chair

Greetings, ladies and gentlemen!

I warmly welcome all delegations attending this year’s CSIAMUN. My name is Park Sihyeon, and I am a rising junior at Cheongshim International Academy. I am honoured to be the ECOSOC deputy chair for this Model United Nations conference.

I will do my best to make this experience beneficial and pleasurable for all honourable delegates. Whenever you find MUN difficult, please do not hesitate to contact me. I would be more than happy to help. Hope to meet you all in the conference room!

Environment Assembly

Agenda Intro

Agenda A: Devising ways to counteract the increasing acidification of the ocean

Ocean acidification has several significant impacts on marine ecosystems and organisms. The most notable effect is the reduced availability of carbonate ions, which are essential building blocks for forming calcium carbonate, a vital component of the shells and skeletons of many marine organisms, such as corals, mollusks, and some plankton species. There must be a specific solution to prevent ocean acidification and reduce environmental harm.

Agenda B: Conceiving methods to resolve the issue of environmental justice being exploited in contemporary society

Environmental justice issues revolve around the unequal distribution of environmental benefits and burdens among different communities and social groups. Environmental justice recognizes that marginalised communities, including low-income neighbourhoods, indigenous populations, and communities of colour, have ecological hazards and pollution while having limited access to environmental resources and benefits.

Eunbin AmyLia Hong
Head Chair

Greetings, esteemed delegates!

Sending the warmest regards to delegates participating in CSIAMUN XVI, I am Eunbin AmyLia Hong (she/her), the Head Chair of UNEA. I delight in your choice to join UNEA and it is a definite honour to guide you throughout the conference.

The UNEA committee issues environmentally relevant agendas, and we wish to develop a prolific discussion.
I would put my utmost efforts into making CSIAMUN XVI a fruitful and congenial experience. For first-time delegates, I thoroughly understand your concerns, yet I am confident that this conference will provide you with more than you expected.

I’ll meet you at the conference. See you soon!

Security Council

Agenda Intro

Agenda: Fostering inclusive peace-building and post-conflict reconstruction within Yemen’s conflict zones

The ongoing conflict in Yemen since 2014 resulted in a devastating amount of casualties and fatalities, including civilians. The Security Council seeks to address the ongoing conflict in Yemen and outline ways for inclusive peace-building and effective post-conflict reconstruction within the conflict zones.

Eunjae Kim
Head Chair

I am Eunjae Kim, a rising senior at CheongShim International Academy.

I will be serving you as the head chair of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). I am honoured to support and guide you throughout the conference. See you soon!

Yeonsu Ahn
Deputy Chair

Hello to all delegates,

I am Yeonsu Ahn, a rising junior at Cheongshim International Academy. At the conference, I will serve as the deputy chair of the United Nations Security Council(UNSC). The UNSC is the most unique and exciting committee for delegates to gain experience, as it is the only committee that has the power of veto.

I hope all delegates try their best in preparation and have confidence in getting engaged at the conference. The chairs will be there to assist delegates.

I am looking forward to meeting you all!

The CSIAMUN Journal

Intro

The CSIAMUN Journal is a news media within the CSIAMUN that focuses on fine-tuning resolutions from each council and publishing articles relating to the Model United Nations Conference. This special “journal” committee strives to provide an articulate resolution and a succinct overview of each conference with its publications. The work of delegates will be printed and distributed in a culminate conference publication.

Minjun Kim
Head Chair

Welcome, Delegates of CSIAMUN,

I am the Head Chair of Journalism, dealing with specifics of resolutions and articles that you, the delegates of CSMUN, with the help of my fellow Chairs, will produce during the few days that you will get to be part of the beautiful CheongShim Model United Nations.

Although I won’t be at the forefront of the conversation and conferences, I will try my best to help you with any task that relates to my field of specialty — from writing proficiency to articulation and eloquence. Additionally, do not hesitate for my help!!! As the Chair, my primary object is to provide the best of the best experience for all delegates.

Best wishes, Head Chair of Journalism Minjun Kim

Jiwoo Kim
Deputy Chair

Greetings, delegates!

This is Jiwoo Kim, the chair of the Journalism Committee. It is such an honor for me to participate in this CSIAMUN as a chair. Being the chair in CSIAMUN for the first time, I am willing to make beautiful memories with the delegates.

Even though the MUN might sound hard, I want the delegates to not worry about it. I promise that it will be an exciting moment for you all. Even if not, I will try my best to help you have some memorable moments to take back home with you. I hope to see you soon.

Thank you.

Commission on Science and Technology for Development

Agenda Intro

Agenda A: Promoting inclusion and equitable access to digital technologies for all individuals and communities

The development of artificial organs will significantly improve the quality of human life and address the issues arising from the shortage of organ donations. However, the development of technologies related to human life raises numerous ethical and societal concerns and conflicts. Delegates of the UNCSTD Committee will engage in discussions on this agenda, explore relevant social science issues that demand attention, and collaborate to determine the future direction of progress.

Agenda B: Promoting artificial organ implant and maintenance in LEDCs

Unequal access to technology is one of the leading factors of ongoing disproportion in the world at large. As climacteric as it is, the agenda will allow delegates of the UNCSTD committee to explore topics both social and scientific, negotiating and cooperating on methods of settlement for a communal sustainable future.

Heemin Kim
Head Chair

Greetings, delegates!

Welcome to the CSIAMUN XVI. This is Heemin Kim, the head chair of the CSTD committee. It is such an honour for me to greet everyone at this year’s CSIAMUN. MUN, for me, is an excellent way for students to engage in thought-provoking conversations about the crises and challenges our world faces today while making friends and memories along the way.

I would like to encourage all delegates to participate actively in the session and not be too afraid of expressing their stances. For many of you, it would be the first time in MUN, but don’t worry! The chairs will always be there to support you, so please do not be afraid to ask for help.

I’ll meet you all soon at the conference!

SeungYun Lee
Deputy Chair

Esteemed delegates, welcome to CSIAMUN XVI’s conference of 2024.

My name is SeungYun Lee, and I will serve as your chair in the UNCSTD committee. It is an honour to take part in such a wonderful event. As a former delegate of CSIAMUN myself, I give my word when I say you’ll make memories to remember surrounded by delightful fellow delegates, amazing chairs, staff, press members, and more.

The challenges you face before and during the debate will become stepping stones for development as an outstanding delegate and a global leader. For any difficulties you encounter, take the leap, and you may find yourself the brightest star in the sky.

I look forward to seeing each of you shine in the conference.

Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space

Agenda Intro

Agenda A: Ensuring long-term sustainability in space research and manufacturing

This agenda aims to close the technological gap among countries and foster international collaboration in space exploration. By sharing knowledge, expertise, and resources, nations can overcome limitations and contribute to the peaceful exploration of outer space.

Agenda B: Removing technological barriers and promoting international cooperation in space exploration

As human space activities increase, so does space debris and potential environmental harm. By establishing guidelines for responsible debris management and sustainable manufacturing processes, nations can mitigate the negative impacts of space exploration. This agenda explores the importance of preserving space as a resource for future generations while continuously advancing our understanding of the universe.

Chandra Park
Head Chair

I extend to you a warm and esteemed welcome to CSIAMUN XVI.

My name is Chandra Park, and it is my privilege to serve as the Head Chair for the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS). We are presented with an opportunity to delve into the efforts of nations in the exploration and utilization of outer space. Our collective discourse will contribute to a deeper understanding of the multifaceted challenges of international collaboration.

As chair, my aim is to facilitate an environment conducive to insightful and constructive discussion. With the collective dedication of delegates like yourselves, I believe that COPUOS will yield positive outcomes. I look forward to the colourful deliberation to unfold over the course of our conference.

Keonwoo Lee
Deputy Chair

Welcome, delegates, to what may be one of the most memorable experiences of your school life.

This is Keonwoo Lee, and I am more than honoured to be the deputy chair of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS). We will be exploring deeper parts of outer space, and I know that the majority of the delegates will generally be unfamiliar with this topic. However, I can guarantee that this conference will present you with deeper insights and a broader aspect of how you see the global society. I can also guarantee that as long as delegates participate in the conference with passion and enthusiasm, the chairs will successfully guide them through the conference.

Thank you for your commitment to this endeavour.

Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization

Agenda Intro

Agenda A: Providing Equal Opportunity for Women in STEM

In this agenda, delegates will discuss resolving the chronic problem of women’s underrepresentation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Delegates are expected to develop policy, educational, cultural, and other methodologies to eradicate gender discrimination among STEM students and workers.

Agenda B: Preventing AI-assisted plagiarism

Due to the development of novel generative artificial intelligence (AI) techniques like GPT-3 and Bard, it became easy for an individual to use someone else’s works without attribution. In this agenda, delegates will discuss the rising issue of AI-powered plagiarism. Delegates are expected to develop policy, educational, technological, and other methodologies to regulate imprudent use of AI tools.

Seohyeon Kim
Head Chair

My name is Seohyeon Kim (she/her), and I have the privilege of being the head chair of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Participating in several MUN conferences in the past years, I have learned that MUN is not just a platform to debate and win an award. Participating in MUN can give you an opportunity to learn diplomatic conversation, meet a myriad of diverse people, and contribute to solving global crises.

Among delegates, there may be some who are participating in MUN for the first time. You might be afraid because you have no experience or believe you lack public speaking skills, as I did a few years ago. However, I am confident to promise you that CSIAMUN will be a great place to start your MUN experience and that you have no need to be afraid.

I look forward to meeting you and seeing delegates come together to a profound resolution. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach me.

Chaeeun Chang
Deputy Chair

Greetings, Delegates!

Sending the warmest regards to delegates partaking in CSIAMUN XVI, this is the chair of UNESCO, Chaeeun Chang. It is a great honour to be the chair of this conference.

I still vividly remember participating in MUN for the first time with a nervous heart. Therefore, I understand the feeling of participating in this MUN better than anyone else, which was my first experience. Nonetheless, I would like you to let go of the burden of participating in the meeting and remember that this is a meeting place for everyone, not for competition or compensation.
During the three-day journey, I hope that all of you will be able to use your capabilities and make a meaningful time together. Even if you have trouble with the meeting, we will be open to help you, so please feel free to ask for help, and we will do our best as chairs.

See you soon, Delegates!

Human Rights Council

Agenda Intro

Agenda A: Promoting technology in alleviating the educational gap among member nations

The education gap is the most common and widely spread human rights-related problem: our committee considered it to be an urgent issue. This agenda is simple, yet it takes work to seek the solutions.

Agenda B: Ensuring the protection of the human rights of factory workers

From the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century, humans began to use machines in earnest to enjoy a convenient life, and factories that mass-produced a diverse number of products using machines became active. And now, manufacturing occupies an integral part of our economy.

Workers who make up a large portion of the manufacturing industry play an essential role in a country and, by extension, in the international community. However, as times change, people’s human rights have begun to be guaranteed, and the need to protect the poor conditions and human rights of factory workers is increasing.

Chaeni Cho
Head Chair

Welcome to CSIAMUN XVI!

My name is Chaeni Cho, and I’m currently a rising senior at Cheongshim International Academy. It is a great honor to serve as a chair of the Human Rights Council this year as well as last year. Over the past few years, as a delegate and as a chair, I have met a lot of people and realized that I can contribute to resolving international crises beyond simple discussions.

Some of you will be the first time this year attending a Model United Nations conference. I would say that this CSIAMUN will be a perfect experience to take the first step of the MUN, and there is no need to be worried. I am looking forward to seeing the delegates to write a meaningful resolution.

Delegates, see you soon!

Ajin Jo
Deputy Chair

Greetings delegates and welcome to CSIAMUN! My name is Ajin Jo, deputy chair of HRC.

I am a rising junior attending Cheongshim International Academy. It is an honor to participate in the conference as a chair for the delegates at HRC. During the MUN, delegates will have to go through the experience of public speaking, debates, and deep conversations about the agenda. Even though the process seems complicated, I am certain that the delegates will learn from the complications, and could know the charms of MUN. I will look forward to meeting you all and hope CSIAMUN will be a fruitful experience for all.

See you soon!

World Health Assembly

Agenda Intro

Agenda A: Devising measures to mitigate maternal health infringements and illicit medical practices in the surrogacy market

With the advent of reproductive technology, IVF in particular has ignited heated conversations globally. As is with many breakthrough inventions in the past century, artificial fertilization birthed the creation of a new industry: the surrogacy market. While acknowledging that the initial purpose for surrogacy was due to multiple factors such as altruism, the result has been a mix of both auspicious and sinister effects. LGBTQ, infertile, and disabled couples all rush in to be given a second chance to grow their families.

On the other side of the table, however, as commercial surrogacy progresses – it is true that many surrogates in developing countries are joining the industry as a last resort for money. The status quo illuminates a world in which adequate healthcare is not provided to surrogate mothers during pregnancy and postpartum.

Delegates in WHA will discuss multiple clashes within the pillars of medical ethics. As but one example, when and how can one’s autonomy be overruled by non-maleficence? (i.e to inflict no harm) Delegates are encouraged to explore realistic solutions on both medical and social aspects.

Agenda B: Devising Action Plans for Pathogen Access and Benefit-Sharing (P-ABS)

Even though the world is still reeling from the long-term effects of COVID 19, threats of future public health emergencies of international concern (PHEIC) loom near, with the likelihood of another deadly pandemic before 2050 being extremely high. In order to holistically prevent, prepare, and respond to PHEICs, ensuring equitable access to pathogen sharing and benefit-sharing (P-ABS) is essential.

P-ABS can greatly expedite disease research and the development of vaccines. However, the clashing interests of various parties prevent active information sharing. During this conference, delegates will explore the issue through a multidimensional lens, examine past instances, and shape the direction of future healthcare to effectively reduce PHEIC repercussions.

Yoon Na
Chair

Greetings, Delegates!

Welcome to CSIAMUN XVI. My name is Yoon Na, and it is my utmost honor to serve as your chair for the World Health Assembly (WHA). As the world gradually reaches a post-pandemic era, navigating future healthcare will be a critical task. From improving healthcare conditions in the surrogacy market to preparing for future pandemics, the challenges ahead are wide and varied. You, as part of the WHA, will play an integral role in facilitating necessary discussions to promote health worldwide.

As someone who has been in a delegate’s shoes, my advice to you is this: Confidence is everything. MUN can be intimidating, but by wielding confidence, you will soon find yourself deeply immersed in debate. Throughout the conference, I will work tirelessly to gift all delegates with enhanced confidence, valuable takeaways, and treasured memories.

See you in February!

Ikeda Yuki
Chair

Hey delegates,

My name is Yuki Ikeda, chair of the World Health Assembly alongside Yoon. Thank you all for having an interest in our committee, we are confident that the three days in CSIAMUN will be unforgettable. Keeping in mind that this is a senior committee, conferences are going to be a bit more fast-paced and grueling but all the more memorable.

We are extremely proud to propose our agendas – both surrounding prevalent issues in our society that need innovative reevaluation. Open your eyes and don’t feel afraid to dive in.

See you at Gapyeong!
